There are lots of great places to go snorkeling at around Honolulu. However, the best place to go is to snorkel at Hanauma Bay. This is a very popular destination with plenty of great Waikiki hotels located nearby. What is also nice is that whenever you choose to snorkel at Hanauma Bay there is a city bus that can take you there.
A lot of people who have already had the opportunity to snorkel at Hanauma Bay describe it like you’re swimming inside of a huge fish bowl. This is because Hanauma Bay is located within a sunken volcano that’s collapsed, creating a great bay. Very rarely will you be unable to snorkel at hanauma bay. However, you do need to understand that this is a protected area and thus it’s closed on Wednesdays to give the ecosystem a break.
Whenever you arrive to snorkel at Hanauma Bay you’ll find plenty of information about the area’s geology, ecology and fish life. You will also be required to watch a 15 minute video prior to being able to snorkel at Hanauma Bay. This is great because it allows you to learn about what you’re going to see, as well as what you should and should not do. For instance, you’ll discover that 25% of the fish there are endemic to Hawaii and that you’re about to see a lot of butterfly fish.
One thing that you won’t be able to do whenever you snorkel at Hanauma Bay is smoke. This is their way of keeping the bay clean but it can also be quite refreshing for anyone who doesn’t smoke. If you do smoke, you can walk up a steep road that may cause you to think twice about your habit.
Some people do find that it is a bit tricky to snorkel at Hanauma Bay because of the way in and out, which is through a keyhole that can be quite ferocious, even at low tide. There are two communication cables available for you to use in getting through this gap though. However, you’ll still need to move your gear quite a distance in order to snorkel at Hanauma Bay. On the bright side though, there are plenty of showers and lock boxes available for rent so that you don’t have to worry about taking your keys and ID with you as you snorkel at Hanauma Bay.
